Should RGC put on a guitar festival?

Postby FGarden555 on Wed Jul 15, 2009 3:20 pm

I have heard the idea of a club picnic thrown around a bit. Which sounds like a lot of fun, but I understand pinning a venue down has proven problematic. I was just curious to see if there was anyone (Except me!) that is thoroughly excited about the prospect, or furthermore, would like to see something like a guitar festival come to fruition next summer(ish). Maybe a weekend filled with performers, educators, and vendors, combined with the company of like minded guitar enthusiasts; Sound interesting?

Relative to this, I have spoken to a few people who have attended “guitar getaways” and “guitar camps” and have had nothing but great things to say about them. Don Ross holds an event called the “Cannington Guitar Weekend” in Cannington, Ontario, Canada. I know one person who attended it and said it was incredible. Victor Wooten holds a Bass Guitar and Nature Camp every year where they camp on site.

Anyone have any questions or thoughts regarding this? Thanks and hope to hear some thoughts and ideas from you!

Everyone seems to be blowing this question off - possibly for the same reason I have been - don't want to be a buzz-kill. As great an experience as this could be (and the facility you linked to looks perfect), in all honesty I have to say it is very unlikely that I would decide to attend such an event. Maybe I'm too old or it's just not my element - I have not even been to a folk festival since 1967 ( went to Mariposa that year). That was more about Hippie chicks and Canadian beer than the music. Clearly, I don't speak for anyone else - just myself. There's just so much going on in life these days that it's hard to sign up to put more on the calendar. I hope others are more enthused than I. I think it'd be the coolest damned thing around. I'd drive to it for sure.

I do know that they will be doing something at North Fork next summer that is guitar related. It doesn't have to be a club sponsored event. The owners are a friend of a friend that knows that I talk about the club all the time, so he asked me if I might put a word in with the core members to see if anyone wanted to get involved. I know I would like to have a hand in making it happen, but I was just curious to see who else might promote, attend, or present at such an event if it were to take place. That's all. The hypothetical attendance vote is 50/50 (not counting mine). Tie breaker anyone?
